Order to Lieut. Caldwell, 29 Jan. 1861.

Order issued by John A. Dix, Secretary of the Treasury, commanding Lieut. Caldwell to arrest Capt. Breskwood and assume command of his cutter. If Capt. Breskwood attempts to interfere with Caldwell's command, Dix orders, "consider him as a mutineer & treat him accordingly." If anyone tries to take down the American flag, Dix adds, "shoot him on the spot." At the head of the order is written: Treasury Department, Jan. 29, 1861.

Dix was born in Boscawen, New Hampshire on July 24 1798, the son of Timothy Dix and Abigail Wilkins, and brother of composer Marion Dix Sullivan. He was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy, and joined the US Army as an ensign in May 1813, serving under his father until the latter's death a few months later.
